New Year New Plans
2025 began in Illinois with its usual cold. It’s mid-January, and snow blankets the ground. Not liking the cold, I prefer to stay indoors as much as possible.
I found a Facebook group about winter sowing, which I thought meant planting cold-weather seeds in late fall. I was surprised to learn that I could sow seeds even after winter began. Now that winter has started, I quickly began my extra seeds on hand.
I used water jugs by removing the lid, punching holes in the bottom, and cutting them in half while keeping a hinge. I added about 4 inches of potting soil, scattered seeds in the moist soil, and pressed them down. To label them, I taped the seed packet inside the top jug and secured the cut part. Now, my jugs are under snow, waiting for spring. If it gets too dry, I'll water them, but that's it. A big advantage of starting indoors is that I don't need to adapt the plants to the outside. Prize-winning peas are coming!

OCC 2025
It’s never too soon to begin planning for the upcoming 2025 OCC season. So far, I have successfully completed some delightful felt animals and engaging finger puppets that I’m quite proud of. My favorite new item this season is a charming felt cat purse that I recently crafted. It has received the prestigious approval of my granddaughter, who, enthusiastic about the project, specifically requested the adorable cat design. This little purse will be perfect for holding pencils and small items, making it an excellent addition for the shoebox. I also have a variety of other fun animal designs swirling around in my mind, and I truly hope to get started on them soon.
Next week, we will begin preparing online-ordered shoeboxes with Samaritan’s Purse. If you're interested in volunteering in Aurora, Illinois, there are many openings available. Please visit samaritanspurse.org to sign up.
Begin the year with the best products.
